BAAI

The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI), also known as the Zhiyuan Institute, is a Chinese non-profit research laboratory dedicated to advancing the fundamentals of AI. Founded as a collaborative hub, BAAI brings together leading AI companies, universities, and research institutes across China. The organization promotes open research, frequently releasing models and open-source code, and hosts an annual international conference convening global AI experts and industry leaders.

BAAI is represented on Venice with a single specialized offering: BGE-M3, an embedding model released in 2025. Rather than large-scale text generation or image synthesis, BGE-M3 serves the critical infrastructure role of transforming text into dense vector representations — useful for semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, and multilingual information retrieval tasks.

BAAI is one of China's pre-eminent AI research institutes, and its BGE family of embedding models has become widely adopted across the open-source ecosystem.
