Where Terra is the balanced everyday model and Luna the fast, low-cost option, Sol is tuned for maximum intelligence: complex reasoning, extended coding sessions, and agentic workflows that can run for hours. A higher-quality GPT-5.6 Sol Pro variant targets the most demanding tasks.

Two generation-level features distinguish the 5.6 line from predecessors. OpenAI introduced a new max reasoning effort setting that gives Sol more time to reason deeply, plus an ultra mode that leverages subagents to accelerate complex work beyond a single agent. It accepts up to one million tokens of context and adds vision, function calling, and web search.
